Cairns hostel once again stands above the pack
A CAIRNS City backpackers accommodation house is toasting a remarkable hat-trick.
Travellers Oasis has been named Australia’s top hostel at the annual Hoscar Awards for the third consecutive year.
The awards, run by travel website Hostelworld, are based on guest reviews and recognise excellence in backpacker accommodation.
This year Travellers Oasis also won the Hoscar for the best hostel in Oceania.
But, despite the venue’s sustained success, co-owner Gabriel Thallon was surprised to have claimed the gongs.
“The initial thought was just, ‘really?’” he said.
“There are so many hostels, so to win both of these makes us very happy.”
After first moving to Cairns in 1991, Mr Thallon and his wife Kathy have owned the Scott St hostel for 11 years.
Mr Thallon said that in a competitive market accommodation providers who went an extra mile for staff and guests would reap the benefits.
“I’ve always thought that you can make things work in Cairns if you come with the right attitude,” he said.
“We are committed to providing our visitors with a genuine experience.
“This requires a hard-working team and dedication to go that extra mile in terms of the facilities we offer.
“It is important to us that we are continually upgrading, improving and value-adding our guest experience.”
With the ability to house about 50 guests, Travellers Oasis is known for its central location and relaxed tropical atmosphere.
Mr Thallon said it was a “great time” to be a Cairns hostel owner.
“Cairns is a global destination. No matter where you go in the world people will have heard of the city,” he said.
“And we’re fortunate to have some of Australia’s best hostels.”
